You will drive parallel to the Canal to reach Soberania National Park and Gatun Lake. You have the options to walk or hike in the rainforest, kayak on Chagres River or Gatun Lake, experience the Canal by boat next to the big ships and explore the rainforest shores of Gatun Lake for wildlife.

Sobearnia National Park Hike or Walk

The Soberania National Park along the Eastern side of the Panama Canal is reached in only 45 minutes from Panama City. Our hiking tour offers you excellent opportunities to see rainforest mammals and is great for bird observation. The tour gives you an insight to the great diversity of the rainforest ecosystem. We usually walk around 3-5 km in and back (depending on participants).

We will be driving parallel to the Canal, where you see the Miraflores and the Pedro Miguel Locks, Culebra Cut through the Continental Divide, the Chagres River, the railway, the dredging division and the beginning of Gatun Lake.

The 8 hour tour includes guide and transportation. On the drive back you have the option to be dropped off at the visitors center of the Miraflores Locks or at your hotel.

Boat tour at Panama Canal Gatun Lake Yala Tours Panama

An easy morning rainforest walk in Soberania National Park offers you excellent opportunities to see rainforest mammals and is great for bird observation. This 2 to 3 hour walk gives you an insight to the great diversity of the rainforest ecosystem.

Our Canal Boat Tour starts in the center of the Canal, where Gatun Lake is still narrow and the Chagres Rivers gets transformed to be the lake. At the begin of the boat ride you can witness expansion works of the Canal such as dredging, widening and straightening the curves. Further down, the lake gets bigger and we explore its many bays and islands. Along the beautiful rainforest shores you have good opportunities to observe some mammals such as Mantled Howler Monkey, White-faced Capuchin Monkey, Geoffroy’s Tamarin Monkey, Two- and Three-toed Sloth, birds such as Osprey, Snail Kite and water fowl, reptiles like Green Iguana, Jesus Christ Lizard, River Turtle, Spectacled Caiman and American Crocodile. Bypassing ships are a contrasting addition to this 3 hour boat excursion.

Explore by kayak the rainforest shores for wildlife along the Panama Canal and enjoy the beautiful scenery of Gatun Lake. Get close to nature by kayaking along islands and bays. Smoothly you glide next to the dense rainforest vegetation admiring some flowering vines and listening to the sounds the rainforest. You might discover a variety of birds, monkeys and other animals. All of a sudden you see around a corner of an island a big ship passing by and disappearing behind the trees.

We take single or double kayaks along on the Canal boat tour and put them down after an about half hour boat ride. The tour is 3 hours by kayak and 1 hour by boat. You might even see a big Neo-Panamax ship from your kayak or on the boat tour.

The Chagres River flows with hardly any current through the Soberanía National Park reaching at Gamboa the Canal where it has been transformed to the artificial Gatun Lake of the Canal. It is the main provider of water for the Canal and the only river in the world that flows into two oceans. On our single or double kayaks you explore this upper part of Gatun Lake and the transition zone of lake and river.

Look for wildlife along the rainforest shores, observe waterfowl and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the tranquil waters with its patches of floating vegetation. You can also explore the rainforest ashore by walking on a little side trip.
